Burn Up All My Anchors

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

Held down, I have allowed myself to be

Caught up in Egypt again, where Your Salvation set me free

Help me to rise above my anchors

Help me to set sail, to advance again

Wipe the tears from my eyes dear Lord

And rescue me again.

Far out in the wilderness, I have feared

You have left me out to dry

My broken bones

So drowned in sorrow thinking,

You could not hear my cry

Then my Lord stepped in and wrapped me up

In arms of comfort with a kiss

You took me high up above my anchors

And washed me clean, leaving me

With Your aroma of mercy, on my lips

I searched with tender wonder

For my Lord, and found Him there

Burning up my anchors with His power

Surrendering me, from their iron of despair

Burn up all the anchors!

Burn them up! Never to hold down

The crown upon my head, You have placed

So that I may never drown

Burn up all the anchors!

Those tied around my limbs and to my heart

Set me free! O my Lord please set me,

So that we may never part

Burn up all the anchors that tear Your Spirit

Down to bits!

In tiny pieces where Your grace, can’t get to settle in

Burn up all the anchors that hold down this weary soul

And set my heart and life to sailing

Where only You take hold.

First and Foremost

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

We are taught in the Bible that we are to seek God and His righteousness and all of our needs will be met in Christ Jesus, who knows what we need before we ask them of Him. In the verses prior to this one Jesus is giving His sermon on the mount and instructing all of us not to worry about and focus on the things of this world like food and drink but to focus instead on Godly character, moral integrity, and those things which first please the Lord. It is not that God is saying that our lives will be perfect here once we do this but that we are to keep our focus on the things of God and on His promises for our lives. When we keep God at the forefront of our lives we will begin to recognize that He is a good and loving Father who wants the best for His children.

In Matthew 6:34 the Lord Jesus says,

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.”

We are given days with 24 hours in them and in each day as the Lord says, we have troubles and hurdles to overcome but when we put our hope and our trust in the Lord our worries will be reduced as we remember that we can,

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

Be encouraged that the Lord knows what You need. He also knows what You want and yet we too must remember that what we want isn’t always the best for us. God is over us and He not only sees us all but He is the Alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end (Revelation 1:8). He can search our hearts, and He knows the beginning and the end of every situation. The thought can be frightening until we remember as Joseph said in the book of Genesis,

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20)

Joseph was sold into slavery by His own brothers, He was falsely accused of rape by a married woman who wanted him all to herself, and he was thrown into prison. Yet out of all of these things God was watching over him and knew (although Joseph didn’t at the time) that Joseph would be promoted as second-in-command of Egypt in order to make preparations for the coming famine, would be reunited with his family and help to save them, and the people of Egypt from starvation.

Things may look bleak at times. Things may be very difficult. But the Lord wants You to know that He’s got you and that He is not unaware of Your needs. Place Your faith in Him allowing confident hope that He knows and that He understands fill you up to overflowing with faith and the knowledge of God in abundance. Here on earth it is the enemy who means things for our harm and it is the Lord who works out everything for our good while we continue to seek His Kingdom first and place our full trust, faith, and reliance on Him seeking His will for our lives.

Hope in the Lord today and be blessed to be a blessing to this world. For no matter where you are or who you are, you are a blessing. Amen.

I Glorify in Grace

“More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,” (Romans 5:3)

Early this morning I had a lot on my mind and I think that this post will tell it like it is and speak for itself so here goes…

Our testimony is our proclamation of our Salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord and we should NEVER, EVER let anyone shame us into denying what we have been through. As Paul said in Romans 1:16,

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

and as the Word of God says for us to do today I will fear no man. There are people in our lives who may have used our testimonies as a way to shame us or keep us quiet but I want you to know that your testimony no matter what it is, is a beautiful picture of what Christ has done in your life and will help you to proclaim the gospel. So if God has helped you out of something and you are saved shout it from the rooftops!

I myself have experienced childhood abuse, I have been on hard drugs and soft, I have drunk alcohol until I blacked out, I have a mental illness and thanks be to God for creating man to make medication that targets my neurons and helps me to heal and to cope, I am a domestic violence survivor, I have been in the psych ward, and I am barren like Rachel was. Now I want everyone to know that I do not glorify in my grief but rather I glorify today in the GRACE OF GOD! He has saved me through all of this and more. If he has saved me He can save you and if He has saved you all grace be to the one that saves! I am a certified Chaplain now by God’s grace alone. Hallelujah! but I am first and foremost Crystal a broken, healed, transformed, and flawed Child of God who stands firm in Christ and not behind any credential.

In 2 Corinthians 11:30 the apostle Paul says, “If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.”

and why? because that is where God’s grace and strength shines more clearly and abundantly. Let us not forget where we have come from so that the name of God may be glorified in the pits He has raised us out of.

“Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” (Luke 5:31)

These are Jesus’s words from the gospels and I was sick and now I am saved. Let us be careful to remember the Good News; Jesus came to save sinners.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8).

We know the song Amazing Grace but when we hear it do we identify with the words? I am thankful of where I have come from because I can connect, encourage, and provide hope to the sad, the suicidal, the anguished, and the addicted. So today let me encourage all of us not to stand behind our credentials or put on a facade of perfection or hide behind the social media walls. Let us not stand behind what is man made and powerless. Let us not glorify in our grief but GLORIFY ALWAYS IN THE GRACE of Jesus Christ!

Be well today and may your testimony save and be saved. God bless you!

He Can Take it. Let it out!

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

God calls man to praise Him and in the Word of God we are often told to find joy in our sufferings rejoicing in the midst of our struggles (Romans 5:3-5). Yet the bible is also filled with books like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes which speak to the struggles that we face in real time and offer wisdom and insight in how to stay on the narrow road that leads to eternal life. The book of Psalms is a wealth of prayers, laments, and cries of despair to God that result in answers from God and a restoration of hope.

God wants to bring us to a place of praise in Him and yet if our hope is lost, if we find ourselves overwhelmed by feelings of anger towards God, depression, and despair that we can’t seem to control, and if our sadness floods onto our pillow like a river at night it can be difficult to tap into praise and we may find ourselves asking God “Why me?” , “How could You?” or even not seeking His face at all. There may even be flashes of guilt where we run and hide from God in shame for having these feelings leading us to question our own faith in a dark season. Perhaps our emotions have been invalidated so we have come to believe that our feelings are a sign that we are caught up in some sin, when the truth is that we all have rough patches and difficult moments in our lives that our gracious God can pull us out of. Maybe we are torn apart by the blessings of others while we seem to keep coming up empty. Whatever the case and whatever the feelings let it out because God can handle them all. Not some but… every. single. one.

One thing I have found is that the bible is filled with the bad and the good which makes sense considering it is a Holy book about Gods love triumphing over sin, death, and evil. God knows you best and He loves you in spite of anything that you are feeling. You are accepted by Him and you are very dear to Him. God made you and He has created you with emotions and expressions. Sin came into the world and we have to suffer through so much here, but in Christ you are NEVER alone. Let these bible verses speak to you and when you can’t speak yourself, cry them aloud to God and let them speak for you.

Abandoned: Psalm 22, Psalm 88

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I have cried desperately for help, but still it does not come. During the day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer; I call at night, but get no rest.” (Psalm 22:10-11)

I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death. I am counted among those who go down to the pit;I am like one without strength. I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave,whom you remember no more,who are cut off from your care. You have put me in the lowest pit,in the darkest depths. Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape; my eyes are dim with grief.” (Psalm 88:1-8)

Angry: Psalm 6, Psalm 13,

“My soul is in deep anguish. How long, LORD, how long?” (Psalm 6:3)

“How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart day after day?” (Psalm 13:1-2)

Discouraged: Psalm 42

“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you restless and disturbed within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall again praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.” (Psalm 42:5)

Doubtful/Faithless: Psalm 19, Psalm 139

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.” (Psalm 19:1-6)

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.” (Psalm 139:13-18)

Fearful: Psalm 23, Psalm 27, Psalm 56, Psalm 91

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort and console me. You prepare a table before my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:4-6)

“The Lord is my light and my salvation- Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the refuge and fortress of my life- Whom shall I dread?” (Psalm 27:1)

“You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in a bottle. Are they not recorded in Your book? Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; This I know that God is for me. In God whose word I praise, In the Lord whose word I praise, in God I put my trust and confident reliance, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 56:8-11)

“You will not be afraid of the terror of night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but danger will not come near you.” (Psalm 91:5-7)

Lonely: Psalm 25

“Turn to me and have mercy, for I am alone and in deep distress.” (Psalm 25:16)

Sad: Psalm 6, Psalm 34:18

“I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.” (Psalm 6:6)

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

Worried or Anxious: Psalm 37, Psalm 40, Psalm 121

“Do not worry because of evildoers, nor be envious toward wrongdoers; for they will wither quickly like the grass, and fade like the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him also and He will do it.” (Psalm 37:1-5)

I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. (Psalm 40:1-3)

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth…” (Psalm 121:1-2)

No matter where you are in this season of your life there is a psalm to help you to get reconnected with God, and a bible story to increase your faith in the goodness of our Lord. Your feelings are valid my friend and Gods ears are open to listen to you speak them. Remember man may not be able to take them, but God has been ready and waiting to hear them. Don’t be afraid of lightning and thunder, don’t be ashamed of sharing any of your feelings with the Lord. Jesus took on the crucifixion so that you might be saved and He bore all that pain so that you would no longer have to bare your pain alone. Let it all out to the Lord and be certain that He can take it!

Listen, come to hear Me. Listen, come to fear Me.

I came before the Lord today and entered into His presence asking Him to speak to me, but expecting Him to speak to me audibly and with a sound. By His faithfulness the Lord answered me but in doing so He taught me two valuable lessons: to hear Him and to fear Him.

Too often I find that I fear man more than God and that one sin leads me into further and deeper sins. When I fear man I often lie in order to please them, exaggerate in order to find favor in them, I become deceitful as I lie by omission, I become anxious, ashamed, and fearful of their rejection and their opinions of me. By His grace God brings me to the humbling knowledge that by fearing man I may fall into following him and begin to drift away from our Lord. He then circles me back by His mercy to fearing Him alone. In order to break this cycle today, I confessed these sins to the Lord and cried out to Him, waiting in silence for Him to speak. I was determined to move on hurriedly to the New Testament so that my spiritual growth could resume and He began to teach me; as I felt my heart soften to His leading, He began to reach me.

I was brought to the New Testament in Matthew 10:28 which says,

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

The first lesson was a shock to my system and a conviction that was if but slowly, well received. I was then led to read Psalm 19 which is a psalm that I read often to remind me of the wonders of the works of God and His creation and the soundness and beauty in His Word. Well this morning the verse that stuck out to me was this:

“The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever.” (Psalm 19:9)

This is when I began to make the connection that God was speaking to me and that I had better listen. The next thing I felt was a leading to read a verse I had since forgotten and overlooked, although it had at one point been a favorite of mine for a time.

“But to man He said, ‘Behold the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord – that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.” (Job 28:28)

I began to meditate on these words and take them to heart and I asked the good Lord to help me to fear Him today and to not live in fear of man and what He might say or think about me.

My heart opened up to God and He let me see that going into time and heavenly space with Him with my own expectations to how He will respond and what is best for my own spiritual growth, is not the road to walk down. Allowing Him to lead and to guide me showed me that He knows the best thing for me and that He hears me, therefore my faith in Him has grown and this is the fruit of spiritual growth. All thanks be to God in the heavens. Amen!

You might think that I had learned the lesson by now and could go on with my day in thanks and praise and fear of the lord but the thing is, I thought so too. But God wasn’t finished with me yet. I felt a tug on my spirit to open my Bible to psalm 119 the longest psalm in the bible. I flipped it over and over and counted the pages 8 in all, and I complained in my heart. Then remembering that the lesson was to heed His calling I surrendered. Turns out He had only the first verse in mind, go figure.

“Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.” (Psalm 119:1)

I say all this so you might know how important it is to listen for God and to go in to His presence with no expectation, knowing that He will answer how He wills and not how we want, and more often not how we expect. But when we do listen for Him it’s also equally important to heed His words and do what He says because it is for our good. When I listened to Him He spoke in answer to my prayer and confession and He wants you to know as well to fear Him and to worship Him alone with awe inspired reverence. After all His Word does say,

“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.” (Proverbs 29:25)

Fear Not Dear One

DCF 1.0

“The Lord is my light and my salvation- Whom Shall I fear?

The Lord is the refuge and fortress of my life

Whom shall I dread?”

(Psalm 27:1)

As children many of us go through a phase where we are afraid of the dark. To alleviate our fear our parents place a night light in our room and the light makes us feel more at rest because we can see our surroundings and rest in that safety. A night lights power is very small compared to a normal light bulb that lights up our rooms when we’re awake, and in comparison it can be surprising that a small light in the corner of a room can create so much comfort in our fear.

There are times as adults when we are walking in darkness and we have no idea. At this time we need to be afraid and yet our condition can pass us by without much notice. Then there are times when we are afraid without reason, about things which are out of our means for control. It might seem that these states of fear and worry are different from one another when in fact they are very much the same. In Psalm 27 verse 1 David says that the Lord is his light and his salvation and he implies that in that hope, faith, trust, and reliance on God he has found no reason to be afraid.

God is a beacon of light that outshines every darkness and when we search for Him we will find that the darkness will be overcome as we draw near to Him and rest in His comfort and love. When David describes the Lord as the fortress of his life he means that he can find shelter in Him and that God is an unmovable and unshakable force that protects him.

Today we can choose to give ourselves over to our fears and we can also choose to put our blinders on and deny God entirely, but these are both evidences of spiritual blindness. In John 8:12 Jesus says,

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus offers us the best light we can ever hope in and count on because it shines brighter than any nightlight and it lights up the darkness of our very lives forever without fail. Man made light only shines into one room at a time and can blow out, needing to be replaced so that we can find our way again. The light of Christ never goes out, is free, and yet is more priceless than any wattage you can purchase at your local department store.

There are times when all of us get afraid. These are times when there is a lot we can be afraid of. But might I encourage you today to seek the light of the Lord as David did? He ends this verse with hope in the light of our Lord in his declaration,

“Whom shall I dread?’

Today run towards the light of Christ. Trust in Him for He will not let you down. Open your heart, your eyes, and your mind to Him, and let Him know that you are afraid. You don’t have to take my word for it but do decide to put your trust in His words for they are faithful and true, and they never disappoint. May the light of the Lord give you life today and shine through your fear.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

May God Almighty bless you and keep you. Amen.

Study on Songs VI.

In chapter 5 of the Song of Solomon the Shulammite bride has lost sight of her groom in a dream and felt her heart soaring in longing for him, as our hearts often long for God when He seems to be far from us. She goes out to look for him and the city guards come up against her as well as the chorus of those we have come to see as a chorus of fellow believers, as they want to know what she sees in her groom as many have questioned us as to why we are devoted to our Lord.

In chapter 6 of the Song of Solomon we see the chorus inspired to seek Solomon out for themselves after hearing the praise on the lips of the Shulammite bride. She had many a good thing to say about him and I wonder today what good things have you to say about our Lord?

The praise that we reserve for Him while bringing glory to God and benefiting our own hearts and minds also is of benefit to those who don’t believe in our Lord or who may have stepped behind in their walk of faith. It brings glory and honor to God when we praise Him and just think of how much honor we do Him when a flock of His sheep join with us in giving all glory and honor to our King. So when you praise Him today don’t just do it to yourself, for yourself, and by yourself. Share your praises and watch them bloom.

Mutual Delight in Each Other

(The Chorus)

6 “Where has your beloved gone,
O most beautiful among women?
Where is your beloved hiding himself,
That we may seek him with you?” (Song of Solomon 6:1)

The Shulammite bride answers by letting the chorus know that her king is tending to his people and that even though he has other responsibilities in the kingdom they are still very close to one another and their love for each other even when they are apart doesn’t diminish in its intimacy and intensity.

King Solomon was an affluent king and he had plenty of people I’m sure under him to take care of and to ensure were treated well and governed right. But no matter how wealthy or popular a king is there is none like our King, our God, our Father, our Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ who governs so well, upholds Justice so good, who loves us so much, and has compassion and mercy for us that is everlasting.

There was a time when I didn’t want to share God with others. Like a child who wants their mother or father all to themselves I felt some defiance towards God that He wasn’t and couldn’t be all mine. I have a tendency to hold on tightly to those I love not wanting to share them with anyone and there have been times when I too have been stingy with His love.

Having recently grown up just a little I now see as the Shulammite bride does that God is as much mine as I am His and that even though He watches over a grand flock of sheep He somehow has enough grace and mercy and love to give and He doesn’t give less or more to any of us for God is not a respecter of persons. This means that He shows no favoritism as man often does.

34 “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.” (Acts 10:34)

(The Shulammite Bride)

“My beloved has gone down to his garden,
To the beds of balsam,
To feed his flock in the gardens
And gather lilies.

“I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine,
He who feeds his flock among the lilies.” (Song of Solomon 6:2-3)

The remaining verses of the Song of Solomon are Solomons words to His bride about the love that has for her written in beauty. I believe that the Lord wants you to know and to understand that He loves you and while He has no favorites He is very attentive to all of your needs, your problems, your dreams, your hopes, your desires, and all of the good, bad and the ugly and when He looks on you He is right there fully present holding on to every word, every thought, as well as every tear shed. He loves you dear one and as your soul loves Him so more than that, does He love you.

(The Bridegroom)

“You are as beautiful as Tirzah, my darling,
As lovely as Jerusalem,
As majestic as an army with banners!

“Turn your [flashing] eyes away from me,
For they have confused and overcome me;
Your hair is like [the shimmering black fleece of] a flock of [Arabian] goats
That have descended from Mount Gilead.

“Your teeth are like a flock of ewes
Which have come up from their washing,
All of which bear twins,
And not one among them has lost her young.

“Your temples are like a slice of the pomegranate
Behind your veil.

“There are sixty queens and eighty concubines,
And maidens without number;

But my dove, my perfect one, stands alone [above them all];
She is her mother’s only daughter;
She is the pure child of the one who bore her.
The maidens saw her and

and called her blessed and happy,
The queens and the concubines also, and they praised her, saying,

10
‘Who is this that looks down like the dawn,
Fair and beautiful as the full moon,
Clear and pure as the sun,
As majestic as an army with banners?’
11
“I went down to the orchard of nut trees
To see the flowers of the valley,
To see whether the grapevine had budded
And the pomegranates were in flower.

“Before I was aware [of what was happening], my desire had brought me
Into the area of the princes of my people [the king’s retinue].” (Song of Solomon 6: 4-12)

In the last verse the chorus calls out for the return of the bride wanting to gaze at her and perhaps watch to see what it is that was so beautifully extraordinary about her. Let us too walk in a most pleasing way to our Lord so that people will want us to return in hope of figuring out what has happened to us and why we are so graciously different than expected and than we were before.

(The Chorus)

“Return, return, O Shulammite;
Return, return, that we may gaze at you.”

(The Bridegroom)

“Why should you gaze at the Shulammite, As at the dance of the two armies?” (Song of Solomon 6:13)

We should be aware however not to get too carried away by the gaze of the people but listen to our Lord and Savior and let our words, deeds, actions, and victories reflect His, all to His honor and glory. He loves us and this is not to be taken for granted or seen as a way to glorify ourselves or Lord it over others.

I pray you will see your worth in Christ today and that your words and actions will lead others to look to Christ as their Lord, their Savior, and their Redeemer rather than to see you as the one they should be following. In Jesus name. Amen.

A Study on Songs V.

There are times when we get a sense of distance from God and if you have ever felt this way you know that it isn’t a good feeling at all. We may find that we have lost joy in our Bible reading, have trouble praying, or that our devotionals have become stale and dry. Sometimes our busy schedules get in the way, we have unrepentant sin that lingers in our spirits, and at other times we just seem to lose the fire that we had when we were first saved.

The fifth chapter of the Song of Solomon tells us of the Shulammite Brides separation from her lover and how deeply she misses him when he’s not around her, to the point of going out into the city to search for him. I’m sure many of us have felt the separation from someone close to us that we love very dearly and it’s sad to say that many of us are going through this very thing right now. But as the Shulammite Bride learned about her lover we can learn from God exactly what it is about Him that causes us to love Him so much and that He is larger than our feelings (1 John 3:20). Although we may feel far from Him, He is always closer to us than we can ever think, hope, or imagine.

The Bridegroom)

5 “I have come into my garden, my sister, my [promised] bride;
I have gathered my myrrh along with my balsam and spice [from your sweet words].
I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey;
I have drunk my wine with my milk.
Eat, friends;
Drink and drink deeply, O lovers.” (Song of Solomon 5:1)

In this first verse before the dreaded separation between him and his bride Solomon expresses his love and satisfaction for her. God is always satisfied with you. Before the separation from Him you may be feeling He was right there happy with you, just as even now he is right there waiting in hopeful expectation for your return to Him. Did you ever notice that no one ever speaks of God returning to us? That’s because we are the ones who get distracted and fall away. But praise the Lord! Our God is always right there with us.

“Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

The Shulammite Bride)

“I was asleep, but my heart was awake.
A voice [in my dream]! My beloved was knocking:
‘Open to me, my sister, my darling,
My dove, my perfect one!
For my head is drenched with the [heavy night] dew;
My hair [is covered] with the dampness of the night.’ (Song of Solomon 5:2)

Sometimes when God is knocking we are not ready to receive Him into our hearts. But when we cry out to Him in the midst of our darkness His light will most assuredly pour in and flood our hearts and spirits with it’s warmth. So even if our hearts don’t seem “right” for Him running towards Him is always the perfect response.

“If you direct your heart [on the right path]
And stretch out your hands to Him,
14
If sin is in your hand, put it far away [from you],
And do not let wrongdoing dwell in your tents;
15
Then, indeed, you could lift up your face [to Him] without moral defect,
And you would be firmly established and secure and not fear.” (Job 11:13-15)

“I had taken off my dress,
How can I put it on again?
I had washed my feet,
How could I get them dirty again?” (Song of Solomon 5:3)

God wants you to be in fellowship with him, to speak to him, to walk near to Him no matter how sinful, how dirty, how hopeless you feel. God is a loving Father, a caring and understanding friend, and a most gracious and compassionate Savior.

15 “Today [while there is still opportunity] if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your heart, as when they provoked Me [in the rebellion in the desert at Meribah].” (Hebrews 3:15)

Don’t just come to Him today. Run to your Redeemer for your ransom from sin and death has been paid by Him forever.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

“My beloved extended his hand through the opening [of the door],
And my feelings were aroused for him.

“I arose to open for my beloved;
And my hands dripped with myrrh,
And my fingers with liquid [sweet-scented] myrrh,
On the handles of the bolt.

“I opened for my beloved,
But my beloved had turned away and was gone.
My heart went out to him when he spoke.
I searched for him, but I could not find him;
I called him, but he did not answer me.” (Song of Solomon 5:4-6)

When we make the Lord wait for us His presence will seem distant and we are left in frustration and at times may be stirred to anger at God and blame Him for our own impatience. Then He stirs up in us a desperate longing to find out where our Lord has went and what He’s up to.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found;
Call on Him [for salvation] while He is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)

Just as the Shulammite bride has to face the watchmen in the city and be pushed and prodded by them we too have to face the enemy of this world when we are on our search for the living God.

“The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me.
They struck me, they wounded me;
The guardsmen of the walls took my shawl from me.

“I command that you take an oath, O daughters of Jerusalem,
If you find my beloved,
As to what you tell him—
[Say that] I am sick from love [sick from being without him].” (Song of Solomon 5:7-8)

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Yet there are still those around us who will ask us why we are searching for our God at all inquiring as the chorus did to the Shulammite bride, what makes Him so special. Sometimes these are even those who had at one time stood in awe of God with us. At at other more prominent times the questions come from those who were never acquainted with God to begin with.

(The Chorus)

“What is your beloved more than another beloved,
O most beautiful among women?
What is your beloved more than another beloved,
That you should so command us to take an oath?” (Song of Solomon 5:9)

Our response to them all should sound with the admiration and praise the Shulammite has for Solomon and even more so because our first love is supernatural, omnipotent, omniscient and infinite: The Living God.

“My beloved is exquisitely handsome and ruddy,
Outstanding among ten thousand.” (Song of Solomon 5:10)

The word describes the Word very well when it says in John 1:14,

The Word Made Flesh

14 And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception).” (John 1:14)

We are alive in Christ and our lips are to sing songs of His praises.

“[They are living memorials] to declare that the Lord is upright and faithful [to His promises];
He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” (Psalm 92:15)

Listen to the psalmist as he declares that the Lord is his “rock”. Even if the Lord feels far from you or you feel yourself drifting away remember that God is firm and immovable like a rock and He is the most stable anchor that there is and ever was.

These are some of the responses that we can give and I’m sure if you know the Lord closely you have many examples of your own as to why He is so good, why you love Him, and why you search for Him like you do. Just remember wherever you are in your spiritual walk, that He is very near to you.

If your sense of longing for God isn’t stirred up or if you have never met Him before let me encourage you as to one more reason to draw near to Him and give your whole self to Him today.

15 “He is the exact living image [the essential manifestation] of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible], the firstborn [the preeminent one, the sovereign, and the originator] of all creation.” (Colossians 1:15)

Be well and live blessed today.

A Study on Songs III.

The third chapter of the Song of Solomon captures our hearts longing for relationship with God. We sometimes seek and long for Him and it seems like His very presence is hidden from us. In the following verses we see the Shulammite Bride looking desperately for her lover and we recall times when we have gone to our brothers and sisters in Christ looking for God, times when we have sought His face and His word in our devotionals, and in a building where Gods Spirit can be found but where it cannot be contained.

48 “However, the Most High [the One infinitely exalted above humanity] does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet [Isaiah] says,

49
‘Heaven is My throne,
And the earth is the footstool for My feet;
What kind of house will you build for Me?’ says the Lord,
‘Or what place is there for My rest?” (Acts 7:48-49)

The Bride’s Troubled Dream

(The Shulammite Bride)

“On my bed night after night [I dreamed that] I sought the one
Whom my soul loves;
I sought him but did not find him.

I said ‘So I must arise now and go out into the city;
Into the streets and into the squares [places I do not know]
I must seek him whom my soul loves.’
I sought him but I did not find him.

“The watchmen who go around the city found me,
And I said, ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’

“Scarcely had I passed them
When I found him whom my soul loves.
I held on to him and would not let him go
Until I had brought him to my mother’s house,
And into the chamber of her who conceived me.”

(The Bridegroom)

“I command that you take an oath, O daughters of Jerusalem,
By the gazelles or by the does of the field,
That you do not rouse nor awaken my love
Until she pleases.” (Song of Solomon 3: 1-5)

We often find as the Shulammite Bride comes to realize about her lover that God shows up when wr have barely passed by our brothers and sisters. He often finds us in the most perfect times in our searching and in the most extraordinarily beautiful ways.

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” ( James 4:8)

On Solomons wedding day he shows up with a beautiful couch on which to carry his bride and you can trust, and believe, and rely on the beauty and the majesty in which God shows up for His children. Solomons couch is held and protected by mighty and strong men just as we are hemmed in and well protected by the army of God. God very much delights in you and wants only the best for you. His heart is very much glad when you’re heart is reconciled with His.

Solomon’s Wedding Day

(The Shulammite Bride)

“What is this coming up from the wilderness
Like [stately] pillars of smoke
Perfumed with myrrh and frankincense,
With all the fragrant powders of the merchant?”

(The Chorus)

“Behold, it is the couch (palanquin) of Solomon;
Sixty mighty men around it,
Of the mighty men of Israel.

“All of them handle the sword,
All expert in war;
Each man has his sword at his thigh,
Guarding against the terrors of the night.

“King Solomon has made for himself a palanquin
From the [cedar] wood of

Lebanon.
10
“He made its posts of silver,
Its back of gold,
Its seat of purple cloth,
The interior lovingly and intricately wrought
By the daughters of Jerusalem. (Song of Solomon 3:6-10)

As our hearts find God and we cling to Him in faith and hopeful expectation in the fulfillment of His promises, we share with our brothers and sisters a praise report of God’s glory when He was sought and then was found. Our praise to God encourages our brothers and sisters, it pours oil on the flames of our faith, and through it all the name of God is exalted.

11
“Go forth, O daughters of Zion,
And gaze on King Solomon wearing the crown
With which his mother [Bathsheba] has crowned him
On the day of his wedding,
On the day of his gladness of heart.” (Song of Solomon 3:6-11)

It helps to remember that God is closer than being a phone call or even a text away. A call may not be received and instead go to voicemail. A text while quickly given and received between devices will not always return a response in the time we would like it to and we may not always be satisfied with the reply. God on the other hand always answers us and yet we have to be ready, willing, and looking out for His reply. But when you find it He guarantees that it will always be in fulfillment of your needs and only the best for you, His child who He loves.

11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

A Study on Songs II.

God is yours and you are His. You walk closely together with Him in his embrace. He brings out his flock of sheep to eat among the beauty of lilies because he is the Good Shepherd (John 20:11-18).

When we are joined to the Lord in this way we want him to come quickly to our rescue, down to the Earth to save us and to strengthen us and to always be our God.

God sustains us and nourishes us through His word, through the blood of Christ, and by the power of His Holy Spirit. He reaches out His hand from the heavens and He invites you to come to the water that never dries up and take a drink. May His Spirit wash over you like a tender flood as you drink in the splendor of His word.

The Bride’s Admiration

 “I am the rose [of the plain] of Sharon,
The lily of the valleys [that grows in deep places].”

(The Bridegroom)

“Like the lily among the thorns,
So are you, my darling, among the maidens.”

(The Shulammite Bride)

“Like an apple tree [rare and welcome] among the trees of the forest,
So is my beloved among the young men!
In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his fruit was sweet and delicious to my palate.

“He has brought me to his banqueting place,
And his banner over me is love [waving overhead to protect and comfort me].

“Sustain me with raisin cakes,
Refresh me with apples,
Because I am sick with love.

“Let his left hand be under my head
And his right hand embrace me.”

(The Bridegroom)

“I command that you take an oath, O daughters of Jerusalem,
By the gazelles or by the does of the field [which run free],

That you do not rouse nor awaken my love
Until she pleases.”

(The Shulammite Bride)

“Listen! My beloved!
Behold, he comes,
Climbing on the mountains,
Leaping and running on the hills!

“My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.
Behold, he is standing behind our wall,
He is looking through the windows,
He is gazing through the lattice.

“My beloved speaks and says to me,
‘Arise, my love, my fair one,
And come away.
11
‘For behold, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone.
12
‘The flowers appear on the earth once again;
The time for singing has come,
And the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.
13
‘The fig tree has budded and ripens her figs,
And the vines are in blossom and give forth their fragrance.
Arise, my love, my fair one,
And come away [to climb the rocky steps of the hillside].’

The Bridegroom)

14
“O my dove, [here] in the clefts in the rock,
In the sheltered and secret place of the steep pathway,
Let me see your face,
Let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet,
And your face is lovely.”

(The Chorus)

15
“Catch the foxes for us,
The little foxes that spoil and ruin the vineyards [of love],
While our vineyards are in blossom.”

(The Shulammite Bride)

My beloved is mine and I am his;
He pastures his flock among the lilies.

“Until the cool of the day when the shadows flee away,
Return quickly, my beloved, and be like a gazelle
Or a young stag on the mountains of Bether [which separate us].” (Song of Solomon 2)

God invites you to an intimate relationship with Him that is deep and everlasting. Being in love in the spring, holding hands in the summer, can all fall away like leaves in the fall, and become a cold furnace in the winter. But the love of God is never ending and everlasting.

Strong, Mighty, and powerful as a gazelle He calls to you today to trust in Him and to abide in Him as your protector. He wants to see your face. He longs to hear your voice. Through Christ you are reconciled to God by His death on the cross.

Don’t let the day go by, without a thank you to your King.

Don’t let the day go by without a glance upward, in worship to your King.

You are precious in His sight. (Psalm 139:17)

He says, “Dear child you are always lovely, tied to me.”
